Library

Our vision for technology and media resources:

  • Create 21st Century learners who create, collaborate, and communicate.
  • Eliminate the digital divide.
  • Use digital tools for academic and personal learning.
  • Personalize learning for all students centered around  their individual needs and goals.
  • Support students in becoming good digital citizens.

Lost and Overdue Books

  • There is no fee when a book is overdue, but students will be notified of overdue materials and it is expected that they will attend to any overdue items in a timely manner.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to return borrowed materials in good condition. If students lose or damage a library item, they will be charged a fine equal to the replacement cost of the item.

Ames Public Library Partnership

The Ames Community School District and Ames Public Library (APL) have entered into a data sharing agreement to provide electronic library cards for all K-12 students. Student accounts have been uploaded into the public library’s database and are now available to students in grades K-12. Our goal is to expand access and complement the resources already provided by teachers’ classroom libraries and media centers.

Ames Public Library Partnership Frequently Asked Questions

What is a student library card?

Student Library Card is an electronic library card that gives students access to Ames Public Library’s physical materials for checkout and online resources including research databases, audiobooks, and e-books. It is automatically generated for all K-12 students in the Ames Community School District.

Do I need to register?

With Student Library Cards, signing up for a library card is effortless! All K-12 ACSD students get an electronic Student Library Card when they enroll in school unless parents opt out.

Do students have an account number or library card?

Student Library Cards are an easy-to-remember number based on student school IDs. There is no physical card to lose, keeping student’s private information safer.  A student’s account number is the number 4 + their student ID number. Their password is their birthdate in month/day/year format. For example, April 9, 2010 would be 040910.

What tools for success are available for students?

With Student Library Cards, students can check out up to 3 physical items at a time.  Online, they can get homework help from a tutor, find primary resources using trusted databases, access the New York Times and other newspapers, find a book to read, and download an audiobook.

How can students access materials?

Help them log on to the Ames Public Library website (using their account number and password) where they can:

  • Request physical items. Students will get an email when items are ready and have 7 days to pick the items up.

  • Access databases, news and homework assistance.

  • Download an e-book or e-audiobook.

  • Keep track of due dates and renew items.

Encourage students to visit with or email us if an item is lost or damaged.  We want to help them continue using the Library.

Are there any financial risks?

Ames Public Library does not charge overdue fines on materials returned late. Students are responsible for lost or damaged materials – however library staff are eager to work with students to resolve any account issues. Students continue to have access to online resources and materials even if they have lost items on their accounts.

How long are student library cards active?

Student Library Cards are automatically renewed each school year and can be used year round.

Can a student library card be changed into a regular library account?

Students are welcome to apply for a personal library card in addition to their student account.

What if a student or parent wants to opt out of this program?

Parents may opt out during the registration process. Students or parents can opt-out at any point by contacting their school.
