Get to Know Sevond Cole
The Ames Community School District is featuring our amazing Principals and Associate Principals during National Principals Month. Today we learn about Sevond Cole, the Principal of Fellows Elementary. Cole became a principal because he enjoys working with teachers to create a school environment that is not only successful but enjoyable. He has been with the Ames CSD for three years.
“I like thinking outside the box and helping to find solutions to solve problems,” he said.
Cole received his undergraduate degree from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake. He received his Master’s in Educational Administration from University of South Dakota. Cole is also an Ames High graduate from the class of 1996.
He is excited for wrestling season to begin shortly. As a wrestler, Cole went 29-8 his senior year before having a prolific career at BVU where he was a two-time All-American for the Beavers in 1999 and 2000. Additionally, Cole was a conference champion in 1999 and a scholar All-American in 2000.
He was the assistant coach for the Beavers from 2001 to 2006 and head coach for BVU starting in the 2008-2009 season until the 2013-2014 season. Cole has also held a number of positions in school districts from science and social studies teacher, to principal.
His favorite school lunches include rectangle pizza or crispitos. If given the opportunity to have a full hour of free time, Cole would prefer to be outside and enjoy the weather. When he was the age of the students in Fellows, he could be found skateboarding.
Cole’s favorite way to connect with students is also a goal he has set out for himself every day.
“Smiling is the fastest and simplest way to make a connection with anyone,” he said. “My goal is to smile at every student that I interact with during the day.”
Cole is inspired by his fellow Fellows staff. He adds, “They pour their hearts into their jobs and selflessly make decisions that are best for their students every day. I am constantly reminded of how hard it is to be successful as a teacher. Watching our staff interact with students drives me to be a leader that they deserve. The Fellows staff is amazing and I am a better principal because of them.”
Thank you, Principal Cole!
